What Sweeteners Do You Use?

There’s no doubt that most of us love to use sweeteners in some of our foods. I’ll admit, I love cookies, candies and ice cream. I wish I didn’t! The ice cream is something I consider especially bad for me so I go very easy on it.

Recently I did an extensive overview of various types of sweeteners that people put in their foods. I tried to include all sweeteners but I know there are a few I have yet to add to the project which I posted at Natural and Artificial Sweeteners. I hope you have time to take a look at it. The report includes illustrations and videos that I believe are worth considering.

What we put into our bodies is one of the most important issues we’ll ever deal with. I’ve used chemical sweeteners in the past and am sorry I did. Now I use natural sweeteners. My favorite is maple syrup!

Sweeteners I included in my report are:

Artificial
Cyclamate
Saccharin
Sucralose
Sorbitol
Aspartame
Natural
Cane or Sugar Beet Sugar
Raw Cane Sugar
Corn Syrup
Crystalline Fructose
Agave Nectar
Maple Syrup
Stevia
Honey
Date Sugar
Fruit Juice

I’m working on including Rice Syrup. Am I forgetting anything else?

  3. You forgot to mention Xylitol.

I use a combination of xylitol and cane sugar.

  5. I just use Tesco brand ones at the minute, they seem to be larger in size, but they have the same sweetness and taste as proper brand ones really…

I’m not sure if this blog is American, but Tesco is a UK supermarket, so just like a Walmart own branded product :)

  6. I wanted to thank you for the work you did in compiling the sweeteners report. I just read it and watched a couple of the videos. I’ll be showing one of the videos on my site tomorrow (the aspartame one) and I’ll have a link to your site on my Friday Night Links post. I like to include healthy living and sustainable living on my site so your info is appreciated.

  7. I must admit that I am not a big fan of artificial sweetners. I tend to go natural and use Demerera. However as I highlight in my website,, it must be done with moderation

  8. Is it true that the sweeteners used in diet soda just make you more hungry and in the end you will eat more and gain more weight in that way?

  12. I find Aspartame makes my nightmares much worse and it leaves me feeling jumpy the next day.

I use less sugar if i use Demerera, so will stick to that for now.

  13. Stevia also has anti-diabetic effects so its not just a sweetener.

  15. We use “Cane or Sugar Beet Sugar” as it is the most common sweetener in Indonesia, some food (canned, bottled and a kind to that) use artificial sweetener, but if the option is available,i prefer the natural one, safer (i heard the artificial could trigger a cancer)

  16. My absolute favorite sweetener is agave nectar. I make a killer thai coconut smoothie that uses agave…soooo good! You can’t go wrong with natural sweeteners!

  17. I used brown sugar and honey with my beverages. With my cooking, I also use brown sugar and apple sauce. I don’t know if apple sauce was considered natural or artificial sweetener–but it makes my pan cakes and cakes moist inside!

  18. I also try to avoid artificial sweeteners when possible. Maple syrup is one of my favourites. Unlike honey it is suitable for everyone to use (vegans included)

  19. Agave and honey are great substitutes for sweeteners, plus they aren’t that bad for you. I use agave regularly and I love it. I also use coconut sometimes. THanks for sharing.

  20. Really great job showing us what sweeteners to ‘ingest’. I am not really a fan of artificial products like that, I like a spoonful of sugar in my morning coffee, but I guess honey would be better for whoever enjoys the taste:)

  21. I love to use honey as sweeteners for my daily usage of tea. Honey is a perfect companion of tea. And it’s far from the reach of diabetes.

  22. Really good information.

    Comment by infrascape — Thursday, March 5, 2009 @ 4:57 am

  23. The best thing is to check the labels on artificial sweetners, and we must not use the sweetners with these labels i.e.
Aspartame, Acesulfame Potassium (K), Saccharin or Sucralose
    Equal®, NutraSweet® or Splenda®
using naturally grown sweetners is the best of all i.e.
    xylitol, honey, and agave nectar
encourage your kids to drink purified water; it’s also good for people on sweetners. it’s better than diet drinks.

    Comment by Sweet Recipes — Wednesday, March 11, 2009 @ 5:03 am

  24. I like to use agave nectar and honey whenever I need to sweeten the taste of my foods. But this is not often because I don’t like adding any condiments much. Whenever I crave for something sweet, I eat fresh fruits salad drizzled with natural honey.

  28. How about molasses?

I can’t stand to use artificial stuff for baking, the aftertaste is just something I can’t get over. It just tastes fake…

    Comment by Betty — Monday, March 16, 2009 @ 10:17 am

  29. Thank you for sharing valuable information. Unfortunately, the only thing I know here is cane. That is so stupid of me. Anyway, I’ll research on this.

  30. Yes, the natural products are always better that the ones with artificial flavors.

    Comment by Mexican Breakfast — Monday, March 23, 2009 @ 3:06 pm

  31. I would like to use the natural ones as they will serve dual purpose. They will sweeten my dishes and they are nutritious too and have no side effects. But those suffering from diabetes should be careful as you should not consume honey or sugar.

    Thanks
    john

  32. Thanks for that report. It is also important to note that SOME artificial sweeteners act so similar to sugar biologically that they can affect insulin levels. So you may not be getting the calories but it is having a negative affect on the body’s insulin levels canceling out it’s benefit of no calories.

  33. I stay as far away as I can from artificial sweeteners. Stevia is the only sweetener I’ve used for years. Good lens btw :)

Hi, my name is Linda. This is my personal home and hearth journal.

I am a self-trained herbalist. I became a vegetarian when I was a teenager in the 1960s. I was a San Francisco Bay Area hippie in the 60s and early 70s. Then I became a mom - the most important job I've ever had.

Now I live in a very small mountain community. The nearest fast food restaurant is more than forty miles during summer, and more than seventy miles in winter when the pass is snowed under. I've never owned a cell phone, but I talked on one once.
